Story Stones Session 5

10 minutes: At this point, I’m hoping you’re used to this first task. If you’re new, that’s okay. I like to start the writing session pretty much the same way. Let’s empty out those brains!!

Set the timer when you’re ready. Once you start, don’t stop. I want you to forget spelling, grammar and formatting. That’s not important here. For 10 minutes I want you to write whatever it is you’re thinking. We’re always thinking. You might write down the word “nothing” and there might be a lot of repeating at times but that doesn’t matter. No rules. Just 10 minutes of free thinking and free writing.

After the time is done, don’t read it. This is important. You can read it later, but don’t read it now.

40 minutes: Time to get our creative juices flowing. Again no rules. Try and forget spelling and grammar and formatting. Just write. Here’s the task:

1. You’re sitting in a fancy restaurant. What’s it look like? Where are you sitting? Who else is dining in there with you? What type of waitstaff is there? You are expecting someone to join you at your table. Who?
2. You’re early. Probably too early. Why are you early? Are you anxious? Worried? Excited?
3. You’ve been waiting for 20 minutes. Most of that wait has been due to you being early. How are the waitstaff treating you? Have you started without the person? Why do you think they’re a few minutes late? Does that bother you? If so, why?
4. There’s a commotion at the doorway. It’s who you are expecting but they appear to be arguing with the front management. What are they arguing about? Are people staring? How do you feel about this?
5. Finally, they reach your table and sit down. How do they look? What do they say to you? How do you treat them after the commotion and them being late? Was the commotion bad enough that you are now being asked to leave? Do you support the person or the waitstaff? If you want or have time, explore the rest of the meal with this person. If you were asked to leave, do you leave together and where do you go?

10 minutes: Read through what you’ve come up with. Does anything stand out to you? Anything you like you might want to expand on or use elsewhere? A highlighter would come in handy here.
