Story Stones Writing Prompt July 4th, 2023

After a busy Pride Month (see previous blogs), it was great getting back into Story Stones. It’s such a great atmosphere to be with other writers and get challenged by different writing prompts. So here we are again getting back on track.

Brain Dump, time! For those new to this idea, I like to spend 10 minutes free writing. Which means, writing down whatever thoughts come to mind. Dumping out all those words, doubts, mischief, etc that can get in the way of the creative writing process.

Writing Prompt (40 minutes) – The Four Seasons:

The setting can (and arguably should) change the way characters interact, look and/or feel. In this writing prompt, we are going to explore how the shift in setting can change your characters as well as the way they interact with each other and their personality. We will be exploring the four different seasons and as the writer, your ideals of each season will impact your writing and possibly differ from others.

First season we will be visiting is Winter. What kind of Winter do you envision? Where does this season take place? How different in the weather (snow? Rain? Cool temperatures?)? Create two characters interacting with each other in this setting. Describe their moods in reaction to the settings. What’s their clothing like? What does the world around them look like? Is it effecting their conversation? Take 10 minutes to explore.

Now let’s switch seasons to Spring. Again same questions. What kind of Spring do you envision? How does it differ in weather? Where is it? How does the different season affect the two characters? Their moods? Their clothing? Their conversation with each other? Take 10 minutes to explore.

Next season is Summer. Take 10 minutes to explore the same aspects and questions.

And finally, take 10 minutes to explore the last season Autumn. Afterwards, take note the shifts that happen with you as the writer and how it changes the mood, tone and atmosphere of your piece. Is there one you prefer? Why? Is there one you struggled with? Why? It’s a great exercise to explore your characters in different settings.

Sharing Time! Don’t keep these words a secret! Share your work! And if you don’t have anyone to share your work with, share it with us. Submit it to me and I’ll certainly reply and could possibly share it here on my website!

It’s really great getting back into writing again. I always look forward to Story Stones.
